ARCHITECTURE PROFESSION

CABE - Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment sponsored a study by Royal Holloway College on the experiences of ethnic minorities in the Built Environment - the architecture and design profession.

The findings of the study demonstrate the challenges that we find in other professions:

  • barriers to entry
  • lack of opportunities and quality training and support
  • poor mentoring
  • cultural illiteracy and poor cultural intelligence or sensitivity
  • lack of respect for creative capabilities of diverse people

This is surprising as it is a creative profession. It is also a warning to ethnic professionals considering a career in this field. Change needs to happen, and needs to be led from the top.
